Mud MaskThere are few cosmetics companies as dedicated to ecological practices as Lush. In fact, most of their products are sold “naked,” meaning the bath bombs and shampoo bars come without any packaging at all. Imagine if there were no more empty shampoo bottles to dispose of. The products that do require packaging use 100% recycled components.

Many Lush face scrubs and other cleansers come in their signature black pots. These pots are made from BPA-Free, 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and have their own recycling program. For every five black pots returned to the Lush store, consumers receive a complimentary fresh face mask. In just one year, 300,000 black pots were recycled into new black pots or into heavy material like construction beams. The pots are made from a polypropylene plastic, a very sturdy material.

Here are some additional “Green Stats” we pulled from the Lush website:

  • Our pots and bottles are made from BPA-Free, 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.
  • Our store carrier bags are made with 100% post-consumer recycled paper and are compostable.
  • Our products for shipment are packed in biodegradable plastic bags, recycled paper and/or biodegradable filler and eco-friendly packing tape.
  • Our gifts are wrapped in 100% recycled paper and packaged with biodegradable filler.
  • By making our shampoo bars solid we save over 450,000 liters (118,800 gallons) of water each year.
  • 100% of our electricity consumed, is replenished into the grid with renewable energy from wind and low-impact hydro, through Bullfrog Power.
  • In the spring of 2010, we hit our goal of reducing our overall energy consumption by 14%!

We’re pretty impressed with all that this cosmetics company has accomplished. Lush is influencing the industry in a great way!
