In November 2013, Hugh Jackman was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, and he’s been a serious advocate of sun protection ever since. Now, he’s launched a product line marketed toward kids with his business partner Chris Clarke called Pure Sun Defense.
The entire product line, whose appeal to children comes mainly from its character-based packaging, can be described by the following:
- Broad Spectrum SPF 50 UVA/UBA protection and water resistant
- PABA free, fragrance free and hypoallergenic
- Tested by dermatologists, pediatricians, and recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation
- Made in America
Sunscreen that Appeals to Kids
The products come in 6 oz spray and 8 oz tube and will be sold at your local Walmart and Target. Additionally, Pure Sun Defense products will be adorned with your child’s favorite characters, thanks to partnerships with Marvel, Disney, and Universal Studios. The idea is that children will be more open to learning about sun protection when engaged by The Avengers, Anna and Elsa, Spider-Man, the Minions, or the Disney Princesses.
According to the Pure Defense website, kids under the age of ten who don’t wear sunscreen are 50% more likely to develop skin cancer as adults than children who do.
“Sun protection wasn’t as prominent for my generation and it’s important we emphasize its value for the next,” says Jackman. “I’m a father and want my children – all kids, really – to protect themselves against the health risk of skin cancer, since it’s so easy to do so.”
