It’s that time of year again — Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2018 has been announced. This year’s shade is Ultra Violet, meant to communicate originality and forward thinking.

Bold purples like Ultra Violet have long been signs of ingenuity and artistic expression. In the announcement, Pantone recognizes iconic artists like Jimi Hendrix, Prince, and David Bowie. All of whom were well known to favor this enigmatic shade.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” -Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute

This follows last year’s shade of Greenery, which symbolized restoration and renewal.

You can expect to see Ultra Violet featured in everything from home decor to fashion in the coming year. See Pantone’s official page here.
